Irrelevant Networking

July 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I swear, the subtle networking that goes on
at my work is insane.

Insane.

A double use of the word was warranted.
I’ve met council members, local and traveling
artists, musicians and countless faces I’m
sure I’ll see on billboards later.

One such musician is this guy, Allan Boothe.
On several occasions, I’ve been startled by his
resemblance (physical, not musical) to Andrew Bird.
He might possibly hate me for that, but I don’t
know him, so I’ll forgive myself.

Stole this straight from his site:

Allan Boothe is a singer/songwriter who applies a refreshing perspective to dark and introspective themes with the emotive, child-like wonder of a young boy. He
sings haunting and sometimes humorous lullabies using alliterative, elusive lyrics which seem to suggest the sense rather than simply state it. Inherently raw and intrinsically human, his voice has been described as “forcefully fragile, high and throaty imperfection that captures his soulful sentiments in the same vein as Isaac Brock, Gordon Gano and Neil Young.”

I enjoy supporting the locals, and I want you to too. Also, he’s got talent so why not?

I really should feel bad about posting so many from this guy, but really, he’s just amazing. This time, I’ve got a video for you.

Loop pedals are one of THE best inventions from the perspective of a solo musician. On another note, I need a quote for this post. “Music is one of the ways we make sense of our lives, one of the ways in which we express feelings when we have no words, a way for us to understand things with our hearts when we cannot with our minds.” That from pianist Karl Paulnack. I could not have said it better myself.

Yawny, Yes

December 22, 2008 · 1 Comment

Just listen to this. For a minute.

Yawny At The Apocalypse

Fellow Washingtonians, here’s what you need to know.

Andrew Bird.

                   Amazing.

                                    February 23, 2009.

                                                           Seattle. Be there.

I may even see you.

What strikes me about Yawny at the Apocalypse, and any song, really, is its accidental brilliance. At least that’s the way I see it. Though the sum of its parts seem so simple, I still find myself continually analyzing, to find that the song as a whole is very complex. The soaring melody takes precedence, naturally, but backed by a droning cacophony of sundry sounds, it becomes more beautiful, more unique, and less repetitious. And I’m sure it’s all practiced improvisation, an uncommon talent not easily achieved.

The minds of musicians are quite fascinating, in how easily they can thoroughly confuse  and amaze the critical listener. How do they do it? Andrew Bird has the ability to effortlessly capitalize on this talent with most, if not all, of his music.

By Me, CRS.
