Magazine Design has us doing a redesign of
a local magazine of our choosing. London is local, right?
On a technicality, I win. It covers the London local music scene.
The only main specification was that we could not choose somebody well established such as National Geographic, Vogue, or Communication Arts. Perhaps you catch my drift.
fROOTS (read f roots, not froots) :
Isn’t it great? *
Clarification, this is the CURRENT design, not mine.
fRoots (previously Folk Roots) is the world’s leading magazine covering modern and traditional music with roots from around the globe, from Anglo-trad to Zanzibar pop via the great mixing desk in the sky.
It will be a while before you see the final product but I thought I’d give you a heads up.
Here’s my logotype in progress :
![]()
* I didn’t really mean that.

Calum Macleod
[ if you must know his real name ]
is a young talent living in Scotland.
I ran across his work when searching globally for fellow graphic designers. He has kindly let me put up some of it and pester him a bit.
By downloading Photoshop some years ago, Calum got his humble start.
Pretty much self taught, he says. Maddening sometimes, isn’t it?
At the moment, he is studying Visual Communications but with dreams of moving away to art school. Whether it’s to Glasgow or New York, we wish him the best.

He is also in a band called Disco Wizards. (Observe above.) They plan to release an EP titled Butterflies in the fall for which he has designed the cover (below). Give a listen [ here ].
When asked about his music : There is no main inspiration for it, we started making it because we were listening to a lot of club music at the time. It was in the summer holidays so we had nothing else to do. As our music tastes change, the music we produce changes. Not drastically though, we know what we like and don’t want to just throw out what amuses other people.
Well said. May much fulfillment come of that too.

This was a project from last quarter’s typography class.
I had forgotten about it. once i get back the printed version
I may re-post it with shots of the tangible.
One of the requirements was to tailor it to an audience.
I chose families; tell me if I failed miserably.

I was proud but I spent entirely too much time on that map.
The St. Louis Zoo is no easy task to replicate. The worst of it is,
I don’t think that map is even adult friendly.

Every thing I found on this page amazed me. To the point of no words.

the finals [ set two ]

I did not remember telling you about this one but it appears that I did.
So this is the final:
Only time will tell if I am truly happy with it. I have almost reached that point where I will reevaluate everything I designed and desire to make the changes, all the while shaking my head and muttering, what was I thinking? Not there yet.
I apologize for the out of focus images.

Remember this?
This is not the coffin of which I spoke, but a remake as I couldn’t deal with the intense amount of strength it took to lift and then open that box. Who wants to work so hard for tea? In any case, I still have that one to serve as a fine memory of what not to do.
Thanks to Chloe for the use of her camera.
