I have this thing about asking to use photographs & artwork. You should too.

That being said, if you see no images to accompany text, I was unsuccessful in obtaining permission.

Animal Farm, Illustrated

June 17, 2009 · 3 Comments

I took a Drawing class last quarter, and we were tasked with illustrating a piece of literature of our choice. Eventually I landed on George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Observe:

Old Major

Boxer

Napoleon

Clover and Muriel

Mollie

Squealer

And here’s my first experiment with color. I’m thinking monochromatic watercolor washes, probably more neutral and moody than this one. We’ll see.

Old Major

Anyway, cheers!

Cover and Spot

May 24, 2009 · 1 Comment

Our first year classes are engaging in a little friendly competition to design the cover of the Weekly Volcano – a younger, less developed version of Seattle’s Stranger – and a spot illustration for a fall issue. Here is my cover:

Let Them Eat Cheap

Illustrative

April 11, 2009 · 3 Comments

Chloe and I are taking a book illustration class this quarter which we are absolutely stoked for and so I have this for you. While digging through my brother’s police locker of books, I came upon some old and new favorites with amazing illustrations, all children’s stories. I would like for you to feast your eyes upon these amazing works of art. Children are really quite spoiled with amazing visuals, they just don’t know how to appreciate them. But the young at heart, such as you and I certainly can. I like this idea so much, I may just keeping digging through that locker to do new posts. Here are three to start.

Si Scott, Master of Line Art

January 1, 2009 · 2 Comments

I love Si Scott. Just feast your eyes on this work for a few moments, and you will understand.

Si Scott

“I always start by picking a font I feel fits the brief or works with what I am trying to achieve the piece and then will play around with different page layouts for a while. The next phase is to just bring the piece to life,” he says.

“I think I came to make this kind of work through my love of drawing, type and design and trying to do something that encompasses all them together.”

“Most of my inspiration comes from music,” he adds. “I am constantly listening to music while I work and the lyrics especially. I’m really into words.”

He sites his favorite fonts to work with as Helvetica, Akzidenze Grotesk, and Pagan Poetry. See his entire portfolio at siscottstudio.com and art-dept.com.
